York Minster Piazza and Undercroft

YORK MINSTER PIAZZA AND UNDERCROFT

Project – Commercial Paving
Stone Types – Mosleden Sandstone and Tadcaster Limestone
Products – Paving, steps, ramps, seating

York Minster Revealed is a five-year project generously supported by a £10.5m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), scheduled for completion in early summer 2016. It is the largest restoration and conservation project of its kind in the UK, and will transform the experience of visiting York Minster.

Piazza
The area that surrounds the South Transept approach was laid out on different levels with access into the Minster via stone steps or a temporary ramp. To improve ease of access, existing stone flags and the tarmac road were excavated, the foundations levelled off and the area reaching over to the Minster Gates re-laid with new sandstone flags. Similarly, the existing South Transept steps and temporary ramp were replaced and constructed of sandstone and limestone traditional materials. Works were phased to provide continued access at all times.

Undercroft
The Undercroft area below York Minster has been home to a museum for many years and the only access was via steps inside the South Transept. Now, the underground chambers of the Undercroft have been redeveloped with ground-breaking interactive galleries, revealing the significance behind York Minster’s treasured artefacts as never before. To improve public access, our masonry department installed a series of ramps and walkways making the visitor experience easier for people with mobility issues and for wheelchair and pushchair users.

The South Transept ramp has received the York Guild of Builders team merit award.
