Hand-Carving a Fireplace Masterpiece

Hand-Carving a fireplace masterpiece

For our stand at the Harrogate Show this year, we tasked Ryan, our resident sculptor, with designing and creating a bespoke stone fireplace. Ryan wanted to create something different, original, and something that people would talk about. He had an idea in mind and selected the right piece of stone from our yard for his project – a large block of natural sandstone. Ryan’s idea was to leave one side of the fireplace as natural stone, and then hand-carve the design into the other side. The final masterpiece showcases the process of carving natural stone into an incredible finished product.

First the stone was sawn by machine so that Ryan could take the face off one side of the stone, and then he started work on carving out his design by hand. Documenting the process which you can see in the photos below, Ryan’s initial sketch soon came to life. We love the way that the rough, natural side of the fireplace contrasts with the smooth, sculpted face and other side.

Natural stone, sourced from quarries steeped in geological history, offer a diverse colour palette, with veins and flecks that tell stories of mineral compositions and environmental shifts. The colours and characteristics of this piece of stone could really be admired when the fireplace had a final jetwash. Creative in design and executed beautifully by Ryan, we feel that the finished piece is truly remarkable.
