Supporting Yorkshire Air Ambulance with Bespoke Yorkstone Setts

SUPPORTING YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE WITH BESPOKE YORKSTONE SETTS

In early 2024, we were approached with a request: to source ‘Yorkshire-born setts’ for a garden celebrating Yorkshire’s heritage. The commission came from Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA), an organisation we have proudly supported through our charity efforts for many years. The garden, designed for the prestigious Harrogate Flower Show in April 2024, would later be relocated to Roundhay Park, offering a permanent space for reflection and remembrance.

Project Overview
The project, titled the ‘Reflection and Remembrance Garden,’ was designed by the talented Kate Smithson. It aimed to create a place of tranquillity where individuals affected by the work of YAA could find solace, remember their experiences, and honour their loved ones. This garden was not just a temporary exhibit but intended as a lasting memorial, ensuring its legacy would endure within the community for years to come.

Our Role and Contribution
Traditional Stone was entrusted with supplying bespoke sandblasted Yorkstone setts, a crucial element for this garden. Our task was to provide high-quality, locally-sourced stone that would blend seamlessly with the garden’s aesthetic and contribute to its overall theme of reflection and remembrance.

To meet the project’s requirements, we carefully selected and prepared Yorkshire-born setts, ensuring they met the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. Each stone was sandblasted and cut to a specific size to achieve the desired finish, adding a touch of elegance and durability to the garden pathways.

Achievements and Accolades
The garden was unveiled at the Harrogate Flower Show in April 2024, where it received widespread acclaim. It won several prestigious awards, including:

Premier Gold Award
Best in Show
Planting Excellence

These accolades highlighted the garden’s exceptional design and execution, as well as its profound impact on visitors.

Long-term Impact
After the Harrogate Flower Show, the garden will be relocated to its permanent home in Roundhay Park. Here, it will continue to serve as a space for remembrance and reflection, providing a peaceful environment for the community to enjoy. The garden will feature lasting dedications, allowing individuals to honour their loved ones in a serene setting.

Conclusion
We are honoured to have contributed to such a meaningful project alongside Yorkshire Air Ambulance and designer Kate Smithson. The ‘Reflection and Remembrance Garden’ stands as a testament to the power of community, memory, and the enduring beauty of Yorkshire’s natural stone. We look forward to seeing this garden become a cherished legacy in Roundhay Park, offering comfort and reflection to many for years to come.

This project reflects our commitment to supporting charitable initiatives and delivering high-quality craftsmanship, ensuring that our contributions leave a lasting positive impact on the community.

Bespoke Housing Development – Woodlands, Cleckheaton

BESPOKE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT – WOODLANDS, CLECKHEATON

Project – Bespoke Housing Development
Stone Type – Horbury Punched Face walling, Sandstone Masonry, Natural sandstone roofing and blue slate, sandstone plank paving and dry-stone walling.
Products – Walling Stone, Masonry Components, Roofing and paving.

The Challenges – The developer wanted the finished project to complement the local surroundings and to fit in ‘as if it had always been there’.  He also wanted to achieve a unique finish to each property with slightly different finishes to the architectural masonry.

The Solutions – Our team of specialists worked with the developer to meet planning requirements and his vision, producing sample panels for approval.  Ashlar walling was suggested to break up the texture of the Horbury Punched Walling used.

All masonry items were made using a sandstone that complimented the walling stone.  Some of the items were finished with rounded edges and others were chamfered.  New ashlar, bullnosed quoins were used on one property and reclaimed quoins were used on the others.

Weathered natural sandstone roofing was used on one of the properties and blue slate was used on the other four properties.

In total Traditional Stone supplied approximately 1260sqm of new walling stone, 220sqm of natural sandstone roofing, 180sqm of blue slate roofing and 110sqm of paving and multiple masonry items for five residential dwellings as well as 60 tonnes of dry-stone walling for the boundary walls.

Cairn Bench for Alan Titchmarsh – Designed by Dave Griffith

Cairn Bench for Alan Titchmarsh

– Designed by Dave Griffith

We recently had the pleasure of providing the bespoke worked stone for the seat and the punched support for a Cairn Bench. This was part of a fantastic Commission to provide a Cairn Bench for Alan Titchmarsh’s own garden.

The opportunity arose from Alan carrying out the official opening of the new Hopkins Café at Horticap in Harrogate. Whilst there he was admiring the dry stone walling and the idea for the bench then unfolded.

The images show the bench taking shape and the finished item. We hope that Alan and his wife have years of enjoyment from their new garden feature.

Stone Monument Celebrating The Life Of Anne Lister – Officially Revealed

STONE MONUMENT CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF ANNE LISTER AND CREATED BY TRAILBAZING WOMEN – COMPLETED AND OFFICIALLY REVEALED

Sunday 11th September marked the official completion, revealing and cutting of the ribbon for the new monument built at Shibden Hall, Halifax to celebrate the life of Anne Lister, the diarist, industrialist, and landowner whose controversial life inspired the global hit BBC-HBO TV series, Gentleman Jack.

The monument creates a communal area for the public and includes inscriptions from Anne Lister’s diaries.

Over 250 people attended the event and enjoyed hearing from the Anglo- Australian lead stone mason Emma Knowles about the monument. Emma then handed over to the guest of honour Helena Whitbread the historian who decoded Anne Lister’s diaries, to cut the ribbon and raise a toast to Anne Lister, all the people and companies involved in making the project happen and in memory of Her Majesty The Queen.

There was also the opportunity to meet the accomplished designer of the monument, Master Craftsman David Griffiths. Three of the six female team members from the Women’s International Stone Alliance (WISA) who worked on the monument to bring it to life Emma Knowles (Project Manager and expert dry stone waller), Hilary Deef from the USA (drystone waller and mason), Serena Cattaneo from Italy (dry stone waller and mason).

The project was supported by Simon Lumb, who supplied the building stone for the walls, Traditional Stone who supplied the three monoliths, coping and carving stone and refreshments, along with Calderdale Council who prepared the site and transported the stone.

Trailblazing women to create new stone monument celebrating life of Anne Lister

A group of female traditional stone specialists from around the world are to build a new monument at Shibden Hall, Halifax to celebrate the life of Anne Lister, the diarist, industrialist and landowner whose controversial life inspired the global hit BBC-HBO TV series, Gentleman Jack.

Led by Anglo-Australian Emma Knowles, who was born and grew up in Beverley, six members of the Women’s International Stone Alliance (WISA) started work on the month-long programme on 15th August, which will see the creation of three monoliths connected by dry stone walls, complete with carvings. The team working on the project will travel to West Yorkshire from Italy, Ireland and the USA, joining Emma an English female stone worker.

The all-female team will create the monument using ten tonnes of building stone for the dry stone walls donated by Simon Lumb, plus ten tonnes of stone for the three monoliths, coping stones and carving stone donated by Wakefield-based natural stone supplier Traditional Stone. Calderdale Council is also supporting to transport the stone to Shibden Hall and preparing the site, so it is ready for the work.

The monument is designed by Master Craftsman and accomplished designer, David Griffiths, to reflect the strength of Anne Lister and her love of landscapes and the mining industry, with the carvings revealing more about Anne as a person, including an extract from her diaries, both in her original code and a translated version. It will serve as a fitting tribute to Anne Lister, whose life rose to prominence in 2019 when the TV series Gentleman Jack told the story of how she shook off female stereotypes to live a successful life that challenged 19th century English norms.

Continuing this theme, the wallers, masons and carvers are working in a heavily male-dominated sector which they are aiming to change by encouraging more girls and women to get involved in the traditional trades. As part of this, they held a series of practical workshops to give women the opportunity to try their hand at carving and build a dry stone wall on 20th and 21st August.

Project leader Emma Knowles said,

“There are so few women working in the stone industry and this is why we want to do everything we can to encourage more to get involved and support them through our network. We are thrilled to have been invited to create the new monument at Shibden Hall to celebrate Anne Lister, who wasn’t afraid to challenge convention and show that women can excel in male-dominated professions. And a big thank you to David Griffiths, Calderdale Council, Simon Lumb and Traditional Stone – without their support we would never have been able to build this unique monument.”

The Yorkshire supplier of the feature stones for the Shibden Hall monument, Traditional Stone, is itself unusual in being one of the few companies of its kind to employ women in skilled roles. Its workforce is around 15% female, including its general manager, IT manager and a stone mason.

Emma Hudson, General Manager at Traditional Stone added,

“This is a tremendous project to be involved with. and we are delighted to donate the raw materials that WISA team need to create this unique monument. It is so important to encourage women and girls to get into the natural stone trades and hopefully more will be inspired to explore a career path and seek training in our sector when they see the skill and creativity on show at Shibden Hall.”

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Cllr Jenny Lynn, commented:

“We’re delighted to be able to accommodate this work at Shibden and support this great initiative. The resulting work will create a lasting legacy of this female-led project and provide a fitting tribute to Anne Lister. The monument will also be a further attraction at the beautiful Shibden Hall and Park and will be enjoyed by the many visitors for many years to come.”

Emma and the stone specialists will complete most of the monument and wall construction in the period towards the end of August and first week of September, with an official unveiling set to take place around 10th September.
