The History of Traditional Stone

THE HISTORY OF TRADITIONAL STONE

In 1986, at the age of 23, Jonathan, our Managing Director, set up ‘Plantation Building Services’, a building company that specialised in extensions, refurbs and listed building work.

In 1991, Jonathan bought Sheep Ings Farm, a listed farmhouse dating back to 1605, which he restored and lived in. He sourced all the building materials, including reclaimed stone walling, roofing and paving. On nearing the completion of the project, Jonathan sold the surplus materials to local tradespeople and DIY home renovators.

Whilst working on other projects, Jonathan continued to get enquiries from people trying to source quality reclaimed walling and stone materials. He stored stone supplies on the land near the farmhouse and in 1998 bought a 7.5 tonne wagon to distribute orders to customers.

Jonathan sourced reclaimed stone from the Woolcombers Mill in Bradford, which was a 25 acre site, and in 2003, he started renting a yard in Grange Moor to store and distribute the stone.

In 2006, Jonathan started renting the yard here in Horbury. At the time it was a derelict site with no water, electricity, drainage or fencing, and he spent evenings and weekends setting up the yard, putting the fencing in and the concrete sleepers.

The masonry shed was the first to be put up, which was the only sheltered workspace and was used to store all the machinery. Once electricity was connected to the yard, the first canteen was set up, with an office upstairs.

In 21 years since the business was registered, it’s fair to say that there has been a lot of change at the yard in Horbury and with the business generally. There’s been highs and lows, one particular event being back in 2014 when the main office block burnt down one Friday evening when the water fountain over-heated. Our production machines now have permanent homes in our saw shed, roofing shed and masonry shed, there’s a few more diggers, forklifts and wagons, our team has grown and our product range has multiplied. We’re proud to be one of the UK’s largest suppliers of new and reclaimed walling, paving, roofing and standard and bespoke masonry products, enhancing buildings and landscapes throughout the UK.
